This evening we had the opportunity to attend Mercy Seat Lutheran Church in NE Mpls for the second Ben Kyle liturgy. For those of you who don't know Ben is the lead singer of Romantica, an up-and-coming* Minneapolis band with a sweet sophomore album out now. Ben wrote a liturgy for Mercy Seat and I highly recommend that you get there next week (Reformation Sunday) to hear it. I am impressed with how the folks at Mercy Seat have been out seeking the participation of the arts community in the northeast and this may be not only a time to worship with a new liturgical genre (Americana worship?)but you will also get to say, "Hey, I saw Ben Kyle way back when." Oh, and the banjo player has the logo of the ELCA painted on the head (of the banjo)!
*Criteria for a band to be "up-and-coming":
a. Selected to be on the 2007 Cities 97 CD
b. Paste Magazine likes them
c. Ben is from Belfast and is following another Irish band known for its rock but with a subversive Christian message**
**What is a "subversive Christian message"?
a. Listen to Drinkin' The Night Away on Romantica's _America_ album... the whole thing not the free 30 seconds on iTunes... it's a pitch-perfect law and Gospel sermon in a song.
