Today we began with a walk and devotions along Whiterocks Beach. Jim Allen is a environmental theologist (my term) and he did a fantastic job with two experiential "sermons" one on why people only pick up pretty shells and leave the broken ones behind and how people treat other people like that too... but God does not. And then, at another location, we built a memorial out of stones that represent our burdens, pictured above, knowing that the tide will come in and erase any sign of those burdens. Nice.
We then retired to Kelly's for breakfast and closing remarks from the facilitators. I hitched a ride with the Ikon folks back to Belfast and, after a nap, caught the bus into town to attend an actual Ikon transformative experience. Home Sweet Exile was the service and it explored the transitive nature of life and even how the church could stand to learn what it means to NOT be a comfortable place that always delivers on expectations. We were then given a black box filled with gravel from the old bar, the Menagerie, which had been torn down leaving Ikon to find a new home at the Black Box.
